Fort Worth Star-Telegram
By Kate Marijolovic
A new Hilton brand hotel is proposed for the heart of Fort Worth’s Near Southside neighborhood. The six-story Tempo by Hilton would go up at 1200 Hemphill St., between West Rosedale Street and West Magnolia Avenue. Its 155 rooms would overlook Magnolia Green Park and be only one block away from popular restaurants and bars including Paris Coffee Shop and BREWED.
Hilton hasn’t announced the project, but documents filed with the city’s Urban Design Commission detail plans for what would be the largest hotel — and one of only a few — in the Near Southside area.
The Magnolia Green Tempo would have a “modern design aesthetic” that complements the historic Magnolia Avenue corridor. Amenities are slated to include a fitness center, patio, bar, restaurant, access to the adjacent Magnolia Green Park and boardroom-style meeting spaces. Parking will be in a garage on Alston Avenue with valet services offered to hotel guests.
“Our goal is to activate and enhance the area with a successful Hilton Hotel Brand, Tempo, and connect with the public park and surrounding businesses,” according to description of the project filed with the city by design firm Type Six.
Hilton declined last week to confirm a Fort Worth location is in the works. “Hilton is committed to growing our presence in Texas, and meeting our guests’ needs in the destinations where they want to travel – with the right hotel in the right place at the right time,” a Hilton spokeswoman said in a statement. Hilton describes the Tempo brand as focused on wellness and fitness. Tempo hotels are designed to reflect guests’ lifestyles, whether they’re looking to relax, enjoy health-conscious food or be active during their stay.
Still a relatively new brand for the company, Hilton has opened only three Tempo hotels so far — in New York City’s Times Square, in downtown Nashville and in Louisville, Kentucky. A Raleigh location will be opening in November, and Hilton has said more than 30 additional Tempo locations are in the pipeline.
If the project moves forward, the Magnolia Green Tempo would become the closest hotel to the heart of West Magnolia Avenue. Hotel Revel on Eighth Avenue is the closest other hotel to the shopping and dining area.
Hilton has another hotel opening soon on the South Main corridor. The Nobleman Tapestry Hotel at 503 Bryan Ave. has incorporated a historic fire station into its design and is expected to open later this year with 148 rooms.
South Main and Near Southside have seen a wave of new apartment complexes, restaurants and other commercial development in recent years. Overall, the greater Near Southside neighborhood has seen at least 3,055 housing units come online over the past 10 years, with at least 775 units in active construction in early 2024, according to Near Southside Inc.
More than 1,000 additional units were in advanced stages of planning, including a large five-story apartment complex along East Pennsylvania Avenue behind Panther City BBQ.
